motorlore The Lancia Delta HF Integrale started as a lie. Not a fraud — a disguise. Giorgetto Giugiaro drew that boxy hatchback shell in 1979 for sensible Italians doing sensible things. Lancia then spent the next decade stuffing it with a turbocharged four-wheel-drive rally weapon and sending it to destroy the World Rally Championship. Six consecutive manufacturers' titles. 1987 to 1992. Nobody has done it since. Each homologation revision made the car physically wider. The arches grew, the track grew, the power grew. The grocery-run body just kept absorbing it. Group A rules required 2,500 road cars to go on sale. Lancia obliged — and then kept building them, selling the Integrale as a proper retail product all the way through its competition career. When the regulations shifted and the factory program lost its edge, Lancia didn't adapt. They walked away from the WRC entirely in 1992. No successor. No farewell tour. That's either the most dignified exit in motorsport history, or the most stubborn. Possibly both.
